What began as a student-run event has grown exponentially, with last year’s attendance estimated at more than 2,000 over the two days.
The beer features Galaxy, Melon and Mosaic hops and is 6 percent alcohol by volume. He said area beer lovers will be able to purchase the hoppy, hazy lager Sakura Haze at local supermarkets even after the festival is over. “Sudwerk is thrilled to see this festival - in its fourth year - evolving into a regional celebration of the Japanese culture,” brewery co-owner Trent Yackzan said. Sudwerk will sell a limited-edition sakura (cherry blossom) beer in 16-ounce cans, and Davis Creamery will serve an ice cream featuring Japanese cherry blossoms. A percentage of proceeds will go to My Sister’s House, a regional safe haven especially for Asian women and those impacted by violence and human trafficking. Rachel Hartsough, the city of Davis’ arts and culture manager, said the event promises to be a weekend full of wonderful family-friendly activities. “The city is pleased to add the Cherry Blossom Festival to its list of city-supported public events that celebrate culture in our community. The event is made possible, in part, by a grant from the city of Davis Arts & Cultural Affairs fund. More than 30 musical acts will perform during the two-day festival, including Tanukichan, Jessica Malone, The Brothers Reed, The Midnight Dip and Big Sticky Mess. The blooms often coincide with Buddha’s birthday, celebrated on April 8. Known as sakura, the blossom is Japan’s national flower. It all celebrates the annual arrival of the pink cherry tree blossoms, revered for centuries as a symbol of the beauty and fragility of life. There will be food and arts vendors, a local artists’ gallery, interactive educational and cultural demonstrations, games and more.
